Memorial Day is just around the corner, and here on Cape Cod, that means we're gearing up for summer—sunshine, beach days, barbecues, and plenty of time outdoors. But for hearing aid users, the warmer weather and seasonal activities can introduce risks that may damage or shorten the lifespan of these essential (and often expensive) devices.

From sweat and sand to water and bug spray, summer fun can be tough on hearing aids without the right care. Here are 10 essential tips to help you protect your hearing aids so you can enjoy everything the season has to offer.
1. Keep Them Cool
Avoid leaving your hearing aids in hot places, especially in a parked car, direct sunlight, or on a towel at the beach. Excessive heat can damage internal electronics and melt or warp the outer casing. Always store them in a cool, shaded place when not in use.
2. Use a Protective Case
Whether you're heading to the pool or taking a road trip, bring a hard or waterproof hearing aid case. A sturdy case prevents sand, moisture, or accidental drops from damaging your device. Bonus: it makes them harder to misplace when you're on the go. Cases are available in our office starting at $X.
3. Dry Your Ears After Swimming
Even if your hearing aids are water-resistant, they aren’t designed for full immersion. Always remove them before swimming or showering, and make sure your ears are completely dry before putting them back in. Residual moisture in the ear canal can harm the device.
4. Avoid Sprays and Lotions
Spray-on sunscreen and bug repellents can clog the microphone or battery compartment of your hearing aids. Always remove your devices before applying any aerosol or lotion, wait for it to dry, and then reinsert your hearing aids.
5. Clean Them Regularly
Summer brings sweat, dust, and debris, especially if you're active an active person. Use a small brush and a microfiber cloth to gently clean your hearing aids each day. Be extra careful around the microphone and speaker openings.

6. Invest in a Dehumidifier
A dehumidifying case is a wise summer investment. Using it nightly to pull out moisture that may have built up during the day due to sweat or humidity, keeps your hearing aids dry and is key to avoiding corrosion and electrical issues.
7. Use Sweat Protection
If you’re exercising or spending a hot day outside, consider a sweatband, headband, or hearing aid sleeve. These accessories wick away moisture and block sweat and dirt from seeping into your device.
8. Steer Clear of Sand
Tiny grains of sand can seriously impair your hearing aids. Never handle your device with sandy hands, and don’t set it directly on the ground or in a beach bag without protection.
9. Plan Ahead When Traveling
Going on vacation? Don’t forget your hearing aid travel kit! Pack extra batteries or your charger, cleaning tools, domes, wax guards, a dryer, and a secure storage case. Being prepared ensures your hearing health doesn’t take a vacation even when you do.
10. Get Professional Cleanings
Even with daily maintenance, summer can take its toll. Schedule a professional cleaning with us at the end of the season to ensure your hearing aids are working their best. Most cleanings can be completed in just a few hours.
