A healthy summer diet can support your hearing while helping you enjoy the season's best local flavors

Summer on Cape Cod is the perfect time to enjoy fresh seafood, colorful produce, and meals made with locally grown ingredients. While no single food can prevent hearing loss, research suggests that a balanced diet rich in healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants may help support better hearing and the health of your inner ear. Combined with protecting your ears from excessive noise and scheduling regular hearing evaluations, healthy eating is another way to care for your hearing.

The inner ear contains thousands of tiny sensory cells that rely on good circulation and proper nutrition to function well. As we age, factors such as inflammation and oxidative stress can affect these delicate structures. Choosing nutrient-rich foods is one way to support your body's natural defenses.

Fill Your Plate with Hearing-Friendly Foods

Many summer favorites contain nutrients that may help support hearing health.

Fresh seafood such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel provides omega-3 fatty acids that support healthy circulation, including the tiny blood vessels that nourish the inner ear. While Cape Cod scallops aren't known for being high in omega-3s like fatty fish, they are an excellent source of lean protein along with important minerals such as zinc and magnesium.

Colorful vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli, and bell peppers are packed with antioxidants, folate, magnesium, and vitamin C. These nutrients help protect cells from oxidative stress while supporting overall health.

Fresh fruits also deserve a place on your plate. Bananas and avocados provide potassium, which helps maintain the fluid balance inside the inner ear. Citrus fruits and berries add vitamin C and other antioxidants that support healthy aging.

For snacks and salads, add walnuts, almonds, flaxseeds, beans, or lentils. Together, they provide healthy fats, vitamin E, folate, and zinc, making them simple additions to a balanced diet.

Even dessert can contribute. A small piece of dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa contains naturally occurring flavonoids and magnesium, making it a satisfying treat when enjoyed in moderation.

Recipe: Cape Cod Seared Scallop Summer Salad

Celebrate one of Cape Cod's favorite seafood traditions with this light, nutrient-rich meal.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound fresh Cape Cod scallops

  • 5 cups baby spinach

  • 1 avocado, sliced

  • 1 cup fresh blueberries

  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • ¼ cup chopped walnuts

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Juice of one lemon

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Pat the scallops dry and season lightly with salt and pepper. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the scallops for about two minutes per side until golden.

Arrange the spinach on a serving platter and top with the avocado, blueberries, bell pepper, and walnuts. Add the warm scallops and drizzle with the remaining olive oil and fresh lemon juice before serving.

Healthy Habits Beyond the Dinner Table

A nutritious diet is only one part of maintaining healthy hearing. During the busy summer months, remember to wear hearing protection at concerts, fireworks displays, and other loud events.

If conversations are becoming harder to follow or you find yourself turning up the television more often, don't ignore the signs. A comprehensive hearing evaluation can identify changes early and help you stay connected to the people and moments that matter most.

Fresh local foods, active living, and good hearing habits all work together to support a healthy lifestyle.  To learn more about hearing health or to schedule a comprehensive hearing evaluation, visit hearingonthecape.com.
